I've had quite a few requests for prints over the past few months. As a result, I've set up a system for ordering two types of fine prints. The first is completely archival; the other is meant for displaying 10 years (glossy) to 25 years (matte).
Each image is scanned on a high-density scanner -- either the Nikon LS-2000 for 35mm slides, or a Howtek Drum Scanner for 4"x5" slides. I then remove any dust or scratches in PhotoShop, and fine tune levels and colors. At this point, the images are ready to print.
Crystal Archival Quality LightJet photographs offer the finest sharpness, color gamut, tonal range, and display life of any currently available color technology. The Symbolic Sciences LightJet 5900 series printer is used along with Fuji Crystal Archival paper to produce stunning prints with an estimated display life of sixty years. Unfortunately, these prints are also fairly expensive to set up and process, but in my opinion, are worth it if you really like a photograph. Prints are available in both matte and gloss finishes.
The Epson 1270 Inkjet produces prints virtually indistinguishable in appearance from LightJet prints at a fraction of the cost. This printer is considered a breakthough product -- stunning quality with very long display life. Depending on lighting conditions, the useful "on-the-wall" display life for glossy prints is 10 years according to Willhelm Research, an independent testing company. For prints made on matte paper, it is 24-26 years! I use this process for many of the prints hanging in my home. Prints are available on both glossy paper and matte surfaces in sizes up to 13"x19".
Print sizes are approximate, and include borders of at least 0.5 inches. Note that prints from 35mm shots are approximately a 3:2 ratio; prints from 4"x5" slides are, not surprisingly, a 5:4 ratio. I've also included sizes available for each print type. At this time, prices are for unmatted prints only -- I have plans to offer matting and framing in the near future.
