Fall '98 in Vermont

Since my family and I live in Connecticut, it seemed natural to head off on a photo expedition into New England.  A good friend of mine from California (and excellent photographer) Evan Sedlock decided to join me.  These trips are a lot more fun when you travel with a photographer buddy.  It also means you have an extra person available to push when you get stuck in the mud.

Anyway, we headed out in early October with great hopes for bright, colorful foliage.  Unfortunately, as you can see above, 1998 was not a great leaf year.  Normally fluorescent red maples turned instead into muted, rusty reds.   We still had a great time though, and we managed to find some pretty decent photo opportunities.  Photography trips are that way.  In fact, Evan was so overwhelmed by the trip that he felt compelled to discuss it with a therapist upon his return.  I've used his dialogue to guide you through the photographs...

All photos are hot-linked to larger ones, and were shot on Fuji Velvia scanned with my HP photosmart (except for a couple of Nikon digital Coolpix 900 shots which are marked...).

Evan's Phototherapy

Therapist:  So, Evan, tell me about this trip.

Evan:  Well, we drove from Connecticut to Stowe, Vermont, to take pictures of dying leaves.

Therapist:  So, how were the leaves in Stowe?

Evan:  They were good.

Therapist:  So, did you stay there?

Evan:  No, we kept driving to Canada.

Therapist:  Why?  Were the leaves better there?

Evan:  I don't know why.  We did find a barn that we could digitally modify pictures of  to look really good.
